Pharmalot used Daylife APIs to introduce a Pharma News section on their blog and build topic pages for the top 14 pharmaceutical companies. They pulled latest articles, developing stories and connections for these companies and provided their users up to date news about them. The connections on the topic pages of these companies introduced users to other companies and people outside of the 14 companies that are creating news in the pharama industry.

Pharmalot also introduced a pharmaceutical industry news ticker on their home page by pulling the latest articles for the 14 companies and merging all the stories for them into a river of news.

Step by Step

  1. Define the application

Pharmalot produced a list of featured pharma companies for their blog. They provided the list to Daylife to ensure that these companies are existing topics in Daylife.

  2. Develop and Deploy using the DayPI

The Pharmalot blog is built using a content management system. The integration with the DayPI was pretty straightforward for the developers at Pharmalot once they had the list of topics.

The topic pages were built using the Topic APIs - topic_getRelatedArticles (for latest headline news on top), topic_getRelatedStories and  topic_getRelatedTopics (person and organization topics only).

The news ticker was built using the Search API - search_getRelatedArticles. Pharmalot developers took advantage of the extensible syntax of the Search APIs to support logical operators in the query terms. Pharmalot was innovative to form a general search query by combining the names of the 14 pharmaceutical companies using the boolean OR operator.

Here is a sample query used by Pharmalot to power the news ticker:

"Pfizer" OR "Novartis" OR "AstraZeneca" OR "Merck" OR "Amgen" OR "Bristol-Myers Squibb" OR "GlaxoSmithKline" OR "Sanofi-Aventis" OR "Wyeth" OR "Johnson %26 Johnson" OR "Schering-Plough" OR "Eli Lilly" OR "Roche" OR "Abbott Laboratories" OR "Generics" OR "Pharmaceuticals"
