The USA Today Cruiselog

By making use of the DayPI, USA Today was able to take turn a stream of content generated by a staff editor into Cruise Log, a deep and rich minisite focused on cruise vacations.

USA Today is using Daylife to power their Cruise Log section, full of information for people looking for the best deals, locations, news, and tips for cruise travel.

Building on top of an ever growing catalog of content written by  cruise blogger Gene Sloan, USAToday built topic pages for Cruise Lines, Cruise Ports and Cruising Styles.

Cruise Lines and Cruise Ports are topics of type organization and place in the daylife system. USA Today calls the Topic APIs to get stories, photos, quotes and connections for these topics. Cruising Styles are powered using search queries that are crafted by editors at USA Today. They call the Search APIs to get articles, photos, quotes and connections for these pages. All API calls use  a source filter that restricts the results to a set of travel blogs and mainstream news sources that publish travel news.

Cruise log has also built a Cruisedex that lets you keep track of which cruise lines haven been getting more or less coverage in the last 2 weeks. The data for the Cruisedex is generated using the News Indexer code sample.
 

 

Cruise log is a great of example of building an interconnected web of pages in a particular industry and presenting the latest news, images, quotes and connections. 

A similar implementation was done by Pharmalot a few months back. Pharmalot uses Daylife to drive their Pharma Industry News section, featuring the latest news on leading pharmaceutical companies, drugs, and key industry players.
